The DABAWENYA

I am a Davaoeña. I was born and raised in one of Davao Oriental's provinces, Baganga. I have lived a life of a typical "probinsyana" - simple in many ways and happy with what's around me. My life in the province is something that I always miss. The fresh air everywhere, the beaches, my old room, my parents, the fresh assorted fishes, walk with dad, the hammock at the back of our house where I used to sleep in the afternoon, the people and many things. I feel safe when I'm there because people recognizes me. It's just a small place where people know each other. I left my place to pursue my studies here in the city until I luckily found a job. I use "dabawenya" to always remember where I came from and to honor my tribe, mandaya, even if I'm not a pure one. I visit the place once, or twice or thrice a year now and sometimes I bring guests who wanted to experience a life in the province.

I am just an ordinary person with no extraordinary power. I don't dress fancy clothes just to attract people. I dress simply as an ordinary person because I believe that good and happy people lives a simple life but to the fullest they know. I had been a worrier for a year or two but I have changed it the way I can because I believe that life is short.

Success for me is not something that values a luxurious life. Rather it is something that is felt inside. It's the happiness of having done something that touches the lives of others, something that makes a difference, something that you do without reward.
